How to Clean and Reuse Empty Candle Jars

Don't throw away that beautiful jar! Three easy methods to clean out candle jars and give them a stylish second life.

How to Clean and Reuse Empty Candle Jars

When a candle jar is empty, the jar itself is just getting started. Our candle jars are designed to be reused — as planters, pen cups, storage containers, and more. Here is how to clean them out properly.

Method 1: The Freezer

The easiest method for most candle jars.

  1. Place the empty candle jar in the freezer overnight.
  2. The cold causes the remaining wax to contract and pull away from the glass.
  3. In the morning, use a butter knife to pop the wax out in one piece.
  4. Remove the wick tab with pliers or a knife.
  5. Wipe the inside with a paper towel, then wash with warm soapy water.

Method 2: Hot Water

For candle jars with stubborn wax residue.

  1. Pour boiling water into the candle jar, leaving an inch of space at the top.
  2. Let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes. The wax will melt and float to the surface.
  3. Once the water cools, the wax will harden at the top as a disc.
  4. Remove the wax disc and pour out the water.
  5. Wash with warm soapy water.

Important: Never pour hot wax down your drain — it will solidify and cause a clog.

Method 3: The Oven

For cleaning multiple candle jars at once.

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°F (the lowest setting).
  2. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.
  3. Place the candle jars upside down on the foil.
  4. Bake for 15 minutes. The wax will melt and drip onto the foil.
  5. Remove carefully with oven mitts and wipe the inside while still warm.
  6. Wash with warm soapy water.
